Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has called for increased investment in tourism and hospitality to create jobs, grow local businesses and unlock the economic potential of the region’s cultural and tourism assets.
He said a stronger tourism industry could provide new opportunities for young people while ensuring that communities and local businesses benefit directly from the growing tourism value chain.
The Minister made the call at the 2026 Regional Tourism Awards Night at the Akayet Hotel in Bolgatanga on Friday, September 18.
His speech was read on his behalf by the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council Chief Director, Bless Kwame Darkey.
Mr Atanga said the region had significant tourism assets, including festivals, traditional institutions, crafts, music, cuisine, historical sites and natural landscapes, but stressed the need to develop and market them more effectively.
“Our culture should not simply be something visitors observe; it should be something they experience, understand and remember,” he said.
He also urged tourism operators and stakeholders to embrace technology and innovative approaches to promote destinations and improve the visitor experience.
According to him, better accessibility, safety and service quality were critical to making the region more attractive to tourists and investors.
The Minister further called for stronger safety measures within the tourism and hospitality sector, urging operators to improve staff awareness and strengthen collaboration with security and emergency management agencies.
He said tourism development must also be inclusive and sustainable, with local communities actively participating in and benefiting from tourism activities.
Mr Atanga said the Regional Coordinating Council remained committed to supporting initiatives that promote tourism, culture, investment and economic development in the region.
He congratulated nominees and award winners and urged tourism practitioners to maintain high standards while embracing innovation and excellence.
The awards night was held under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence Beyond Borders – The Black Experience.”
