Marathon walker King Klottey has taken his nationwide campaign to protect Ghana’s water bodies to the Northern Region, as he continues a 23-day walk from the Burkina Faso border to Accra.
The campaign, dubbed “Let’s Save Our Water Bodies,” seeks to raise public awareness about the growing pollution and destruction of Ghana’s rivers, streams and other water resources.
King Klottey was received at the Tamale Jubilee Park on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, by the Northern Regional Security Liaison Officer, Chief Satia Naa Adam, on behalf of the Regional Minister and the Northern Regional Coordinating Council.
The walk began at the Burkina Faso border on September 17 and is expected to end in Accra on October 10.
King Klottey said the exercise was more than an endurance walk, describing it as an advocacy campaign to mobilise communities and stakeholders to take action against water pollution.
He said the destruction of water bodies had implications for agriculture, fishing, health, livelihoods and the socio-economic development of the country.
He therefore called for stronger public participation and support from government institutions, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, the private sector and communities to protect Ghana’s water resources.
Chief Satia Naa Adam commended King Klottey for the initiative and said the protection of water bodies must be treated as a collective national responsibility.
He said water was essential to homes, farms, hospitals, schools and other institutions, warning that the destruction of water resources posed a threat to both present and future generations.
He called on communities to change attitudes towards the environment and desist from activities that pollute or destroy rivers and streams.
Chief Satia Naa Adam also urged security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, political and opinion leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts to combat activities that threaten Ghana’s water resources.
He assured King Klottey of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council’s support for the campaign and wished him and his team a successful journey to Accra.
