Dr Emmanuel Steve Asare Manteaw, Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its communicators to learn lessons from the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Dr Manteaw said the NPP should remain in opposition until it critically examines the factors that contributed to its electoral setback.
“Until the NPP and its communicators learn lessons from their 2024 defeat, let’s keep them at bay. Opposition is where they belong,” he wrote.
His comments come after the NPP lost the 2024 presidential election, with its presidential candidate at the time, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, conceding defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama. Dr Bawumia said his decision to concede was intended to preserve Ghana’s peaceful democratic tradition.
Dr Manteaw’s latest comments did not specify the particular lessons he believes the NPP and its communicators should learn or identify specific reforms the party should undertake.
The GHEITI Co-Chair has previously expressed views on political and governance issues. In April 2025, he cautioned the governing NDC against losing public goodwill over its handling of illegal mining, describing the government’s performance in tackling the problem as lacklustre.
His latest statement therefore adds to his public commentary on governance and political developments in Ghana, while placing emphasis on the need for the NPP to reflect on its 2024 electoral performance.
