Gomoa Central MP declares Teshie ‘Ghana’s most dangerous place’, demands urgent security action

Gomoa Central MP declares Teshie ‘Ghana’s most dangerous place’, demands urgent security action

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central Kwame Asare Obeng has described Teshie in the Greater Accra Region as “the most dangerous place in Ghana right now”, calling for urgent action to confront what he says is a growing security crisis in the community.

Mr Obeng, in a strongly worded statement, said he had upgraded his earlier assessment of Teshie from being the most dangerous place in Greater Accra to the most dangerous place in the country.

He said the situation was particularly worrying because Teshie, which he described as “once an enviable, quiet and peaceful community”, had allegedly descended into what he called “a gangster’s paradise” and a haven for criminals.

The MP’s comments come against the backdrop of recent criminal cases and police investigations involving Teshie and surrounding communities.

On September 24, 2026, the body of missing Circle-based mobile phone dealer Nana Yaw Kyere, popularly known as Terry or Dinero, was discovered in Teshie after he had travelled there for a reported business transaction. Reports indicate that police subsequently arrested suspects in connection with the case as investigations continued.

Earlier this year, two men were arraigned in Accra over the alleged robbery of a Yango driver at Teshie. The prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly robbed the driver of his mobile phone and GH¢1,500 after requesting a ride in the area.

In another case, a Teshie resident was granted GH¢50,000 bail after being accused of stealing electrical cables, PVC pipes and breakers worth GH¢28,320 from a construction site in the community.

There have also been other security-related incidents in the area. In July, the Nungua District Police Command began investigations into an alleged assault of a Teshie resident by persons believed to be police officers.

Against this background, Mr Obeng said the security situation should not be dismissed or compared with isolated incidents elsewhere.

He contrasted the situation in Teshie with the recent land-related disturbances in Gomoa Central, insisting that authorities brought that situation under control quickly.

“We brought the situation in Gomoa under control overnight. The criminals involved were arrested, order was restored and peace returned,” he said.

The MP also rejected descriptions of the Gomoa Central incident as “renewed violence”, arguing that such a description could create the impression that Gomoa was historically characterised by recurring violence and lawlessness.

“Gomoa has leadership,” he said, adding that as long as he remained MP, “nobody will dare engage in land-guard activities or lawlessness in Gomoa.”

He said the people of Teshie deserved the same level of security and leadership.

‘Ride-hailing drivers reluctant to enter Teshie at night’

Mr Obeng further claimed that information from ride-hailing companies indicated that the companies had held security meetings with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service over crime concerns in Teshie.

He said the concerns were reflected in the behaviour of drivers at night.

“You can request a ride to Ashaiman, Kasoa or Nima at 1 a.m., yet getting a driver to take you to Teshie after 8 p.m. has become nearly impossible,” he said.

The MP acknowledged the common perception that places such as Ashaiman, Kasoa and Nima could be unsafe, but argued that the reported reluctance of drivers to enter Teshie at night should itself be treated as a serious warning.

“The fact is, Kasoa is safer than Teshie. Nima is safer than Teshie. Ashaiman is safer than Teshie. That alone should tell you how serious the situation is,” he said.

Security institutions surrounded by insecurity

Mr Obeng said the situation was particularly troubling because Teshie hosts a concentration of major security and military institutions.

He cited the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the Headquarters of the Southern Command, other military training facilities and a military shooting range.

“The irony is extraordinary,” he said. “Teshie does not have just one military training facility.”

Yet, according to the MP, criminal activity continues to raise concerns in parts of the community despite the presence of the security establishments.

He therefore called on residents to demand stronger leadership and decisive action rather than directing their anger at him for raising the alarm.

“I am telling you the truth. You can insult me if you wish. No problem. But insults will not protect you when the criminals come after you,” he said.

“Use that energy to demand leadership. Demand action. Demand security for your community.”
