NPP Upper West Regional Chairman Alhaji Abdul-Aziz Abdul-Rahman, popularly known as Chairman White, has declared the region’s support for former General Secretary John Boadu in his bid to become the party’s next National Chairman.
The endorsement, coming barely two weeks after Alhaji Abdul-Aziz was elected to lead the NPP in the Upper West Region, could inject a new dimension into the party’s increasingly competitive national executive elections.
In a video circulating on social media, the newly elected regional chairman is seen addressing members of the team campaigning for Mr Boadu and assuring them that the region is firmly behind his candidature.
“I am speaking as the Regional Chairman of the Upper West Region. I want to use this opportunity to thank the John Boadu team. They are here with us at the Regional Chairman’s residence here in Upper West,” he said.
“I want to assure the team too, Upper West, we are really behind Honourable Dr. John Boadu to be our next National Chairman.”
According to Chairman White, his endorsement was based on his personal assessment of Mr Boadu’s ability to lead the party and work with its various constituencies.
“I am not saying this because of anything. I know what John Boadu can do, and I believe in him, and I trust him. He can work with everybody in the entire region,” he said.
He further claimed that he had already engaged all 11 constituency chairmen in the region on the candidature and secured their backing for Mr Boadu.
“My constituency, I have 11 constituencies. Yesterday, I called all the constituency chairmen in my house. We met and we talked about John Boadu,” Chairman White said.
“I think they all understand we are going to vote for Boadu as Upper West.”
He made a similar claim about the Regional Executive Committee, saying the executives present during his engagement with the Boadu campaign team were also convinced about supporting the former General Secretary.
“Today, I am here with my Regional Executive. They are also behind me, and they understand what I am saying. So now they are all convinced that we are going to vote for John Boadu,” he said.
The endorsement adds to a series of public declarations from prominent NPP figures in the Upper West Region ahead of the party’s national executive elections.
Only last month, former Upper West Regional Minister Dr Hafiz Bin Salih publicly endorsed former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko for National Chairman and Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid for Vice National Chairman.
The contrasting endorsements have consequently drawn attention within the party as the NPP prepares for its national executive conference, with questions emerging over how openly declared regional and individual preferences could affect efforts to rebuild cohesion following the party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
For Chairman White, however, his position appears unequivocal.
“Upper West Region, we’re really behind John Boadu to be our next National Chairman,” he reiterated.
He also specifically commended Hajia Humu Awudu for what he described as her “good work” in connection with the campaign.
