A 37-year-old man, Tibini Atta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to defiling an 11-year-old girl at Digangan, a farming community in the Kpandai District of the Northern Region.
The conviction came barely a day after the alleged assault, after the victim suffered injuries serious enough to require treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
According to the Northern Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2026, when the girl allegedly accompanied Atta to a farm, where he had sexual intercourse with her.
The girl sustained injuries and was subsequently taken to the Kpandai District Hospital for medical attention.
A nurse attending to the victim later informed police investigators who visited the hospital that, because of the nature of her injuries, she would have to be referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for further management.
The matter was reported to the Kpandai Police at about 2:55 p.m. the same day by the victim’s uncle, a farmer.
Fast-track prosecution
Atta was arraigned before the Gender Circuit Court in Tamale on Friday, September 25, just a day after the alleged offence.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, investigators from the Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Tamale have visited the victim at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
The police said she is responding to treatment and remains under close medical observation.
The Regional Police Command said it would continue working with the hospital and other stakeholders to support the girl’s recovery.
