Construction has commenced on a new 120-bed specialised trauma and emergency hospital at Bole in the Savannah Region, expanding the area’s capacity to provide specialised care for trauma and emergency cases.

Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the development on his Facebook page, saying contractors had moved to site to begin work on the facility.

The 16,000-square-metre hospital is being designed as a specialised facility with a range of emergency and critical care services.

It will include a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Unit, trauma resuscitation bays, emergency operating theatres, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU), specialised trauma wards and a burns treatment unit.

The facility will also have dedicated orthopaedic and surgical units, as well as imaging and diagnostic facilities.

The project forms part of efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure in Bole and improve access to specialised medical services for residents of the district and surrounding communities.

In 2025, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced plans for a new hospital in Bole after inspecting land allocated for the project. The Bole Traditional Council had pledged more than 20 acres for the development.

The 2026 national budget subsequently identified Bole among locations where government would commence work on new district hospitals as part of a broader programme to expand healthcare infrastructure.

President John Dramani Mahama also announced in May 2026 that the Bole Hospital would be upgraded to a 160-bed district hospital, while the Tinga Health Centre would be upgraded to a polyclinic to strengthen healthcare delivery and referrals in the area.

The latest announcement of a 120-bed specialised trauma and emergency hospital adds another significant healthcare infrastructure project to the Bole area.

The development is particularly significant for trauma care, where timely access to emergency surgery, intensive care, diagnostic imaging and specialist orthopaedic services can be critical to patient survival and recovery.

The new facility is expected to provide dedicated capacity for the management of road traffic accidents, burns, serious injuries and other emergency conditions requiring specialised intervention.

Bole District currently has a network of health facilities, including the district hospital, health centres, clinics and CHPS compounds, serving communities across the district.

The specialised hospital is expected to strengthen the referral system and reduce the need for patients requiring complex trauma and emergency care to travel longer distances to access appropriate treatment.

The project also comes alongside other major healthcare infrastructure developments in the Savannah Region, including the planned 160-bed Savannah Regional Referral Hospital at Damongo.

With contractors now on site, the Bole project moves from the planning stage into physical construction, with the completed facility expected to significantly expand the range of specialised trauma and emergency services available in the area.
