The UNICEF Ghana Country Representative, Andrew Brooks, has called for stronger collaboration and evidence-based interventions to address challenges confronting women and children in the Northern Region.
Mr. Brooks made the call when he led a UNICEF delegation to engage the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC) in Tamale on Friday, October 2, 2026.
The engagement, which formed part of his first visit to the region, focused on gaining a clearer understanding of the situation of women and children and identifying areas where UNICEF and government could strengthen interventions.
The Northern Regional Coordinating Council presented UNICEF with a comprehensive briefing on the conditions affecting women and children across the region.
The Council’s Chief Development Planning Officer, Alhaji Habib Shahadu, said reliable development data was critical to identifying priority needs and directing interventions to communities where they were most needed.
He said the briefing was intended to help UNICEF better understand the challenges on the ground and inform possible areas of support and collaboration.
Mr. Brooks welcomed the briefing and said the information would help UNICEF better understand the realities facing women and children in the region and identify areas where its support could be strengthened.
He urged government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to deepen coordination in tackling challenges affecting women and children.

Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John said the Regional Coordinating Council was committed to strengthening its partnership with UNICEF and other development partners to improve social and economic outcomes for women and children, particularly those in vulnerable communities.
Chief Director of the NRCC, Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu, also acknowledged UNICEF’s contribution to programmes supporting children and vulnerable groups in the region.
The engagement ended with a commitment by the NRCC and UNICEF to sustain dialogue and identify practical areas for collaboration to improve the wellbeing and protection of women and children in the Northern Region.
