Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates not to vote against all serving national executives simply because the party lost the 2024 general election.
According to Oppong Nkrumah, on Ghone TV monitored by Kunasi Kumasi the party’s electoral defeat should not automatically be attributed to the performance of every member of the current national executive.
“Yes, we lost the elections; however, it doesn’t mean every executive was bad. That’s why we lost. The party knows why we lost. We have done our checks and are going to correct them,” he said.
His comments come as the NPP prepares to elect its national officers, with delegates expected to decide on candidates seeking to retain or assume various positions within the party.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the candidates seeking re-election had demonstrated capacities that could contribute to the party’s preparations for the 2028 general election.
“The people who are contesting for the election have what it takes to deliver for NPP in the elections 2028. At this time, let’s allow the delegates to take their decision,” he said.
The Ofoase Ayirebi MP’s comments place emphasis on allowing delegates to make individual assessments of candidates rather than treating the party’s 2024 electoral outcome as a judgment on all serving national executives.
The NPP is scheduled to hold its National Delegates Congress and national officers’ elections in Kumasi, where delegates will vote to determine the party’s next crop of national executives. The party has also proposed a number of constitutional amendments for consideration at the congress.
