Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) can position itself to return to government if the party’s newly elected executives work closely with its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on GHOne TV during the NPP’s 2026 National Delegates Congress and conference in Kumasi, Dr Ayew Afriyie said the party was preparing to challenge the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the next general election.
He argued that developments under the current administration showed, in his view, that the NDC government was losing support among sections of its base.
“NPP as at now is almost ready to be the next government because the doing and dealings of NDC clearly means they have lost touch with their base. The ruling government supporters and party members are crying for jobs. This means the government has failed,” he said.
Dr Ayew Afriyie also raised concerns about reports of cocaine trafficking involving Ghana, arguing that the country’s alleged links to the international cocaine trade raised questions about the government’s ability to address the problem.
“Now cocaine is all over in Ghana. Our country is now a transit point for cocaine trade, so this government cannot be trusted,” he said.
His comments come against the backdrop of recent calls for investigations into drug seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana. The MP himself recently called for a bipartisan parliamentary inquiry into the issue. (OnuaOnline)
Free speech concerns
Dr Ayew Afriyie also accused the government of intimidating people who disagree with its governance approach.
He urged the NDC administration to refrain from what he described as attempts to suppress dissent and expressed concern about what he characterised as threats to freedom of expression.
“Now the new strategy they are using is to arrest anyone who expresses their opinion. Free speech is under threat now under the ruling NDC government,” he said.
He further warned that actions he considers unlawful against NPP members could have consequences.
“The NDC should know that they will equally pay for any illegal actions they take against our party members,” he added.
Dr Ayew Afriyie, who represents the Effiduase-Asokore constituency on the NPP ticket, is a sitting member of Ghana’s Ninth Parliament. (beijing.mfa.gov.gh)
