The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a special team of homicide investigators, crime scene experts and intelligence officers to Tamale following the discovery of the bodies of three children inside a parked Hyundai Tucson at Koblimahagu Zuo in the Tamale Metropolis of the Northern Region.
The Northern Regional Police Command has also arrested the owner of the vehicle and secured it for further forensic examination as investigations intensify into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The deceased have been identified by the police as Dauda Abdul Aziz, 3, Saani Alsharaf, 5, and Dauda Fadilan, 7.
According to a statement signed by the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, police received a complaint on Monday, October 5, 2026, that the three children had left home for Islamic classes at about 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, but had failed to return.
A search mounted by community members to locate the children proved unsuccessful until about 5:00 a.m. on Monday, when their bodies were discovered inside the boot of a black Hyundai Tucson with registration number AS 1770-14.
Police said the vehicle was found stuck in mud on a road leading to the area.
A preliminary inspection of the vehicle revealed that the driver’s door and the rear passenger door behind the driver’s seat were open, while the other doors, including the boot, were locked.
The police said preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle belongs to a personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service, who told investigators that the vehicle had been stuck in the mud for the past five days.
The owner has since been arrested and is being taken to Accra to assist the investigation.
The development has prompted the IGP to reinforce the Northern Regional Police Command with a specialised investigative team comprising homicide investigators, crime scene experts and intelligence officers.
The police have not yet disclosed the cause of death of the children, saying investigations are ongoing to establish exactly what happened.
The vehicle has been secured for forensic examination as investigators work to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the children’s disappearance and their eventual discovery inside the vehicle.
The bodies have meanwhile been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue.

A report by Joy Online said the children’s families had requested that the bodies be released for burial in accordance with Islamic customs, but the police declined, explaining that an autopsy was necessary to support the investigation. The police also assured the families that the state would bear the cost of the autopsy.
The deaths have left residents of Koblimahagu Zuo shocked, while the circumstances under which the three children ended up inside the vehicle remain unclear.
Police have assured the public that all necessary investigative measures are being taken to unravel the circumstances that led to the deaths.
