Illegal mining destroys lives, end it- UN tells Govt
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The United Nations in Ghana has issued a statement addressing the ongoing protests against illegal mining, highlighting its severe economic, social, and environmental repercussions.

The UN calls for peaceful protests and urges law enforcement to uphold human rights.

The UN emphasizes that illegal mining exacerbates poverty, damages livelihoods, and pollutes water sources, contributing to public health crises.

It also appeals to Ghanaian leaders across various sectors to collaborate in tackling this pressing issue.

“We call on all leaders in Ghana- in government, in national institutions, traditional and religious institutions, in civil society, the private sector and all citizens across all opinion spectrums to work together to address this challenge. Ghana must succeed”, the statement said.

The statement signed by Charles Abani, UN Resident Coordinator for Ghana also reiterated that the UN supports initiatives aligned with the #PactfortheFuture, focusing on sustainability and climate action to secure a better future for all Ghanaians.
