The founder and Presidential candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has sought the blessings and prayers of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, as he prepares for the fiercely contested 2024 general elections.
Mr. Akpaloo, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Adwoa Akpaloo; his running mate, Mrs. Elizabeth Sam; party executives; and parliamentary candidates, paid a visit to the Manhyia Palace on November 20, 2024, during the Awukudae Festival.
Speaking on behalf of the candidate, Kwaku Marfo, the LPG’s Ashanti Regional Chairman and Manhyia South Parliamentary Candidate, highlighted the significance of the visit.
“This constituency is where Mr. Akpaloo was born and raised. He deemed it necessary to seek the King’s blessings rather than sit by while others from far away receive His Majesty’s prayers,” Mr. Marfo stated.
In his personal submission, Mr. Akpaloo formally informed Otumfuo of his presidential ambitions, humbly requesting prayers for success in the upcoming elections. “I am contesting in the Presidential Election. Nana, please pray any prayer needed for my victory. The contest is tough, and I need your prayer to win,” he appealed.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II assured him of his prayers, reaffirming his impartiality towards all candidates who approach him. “I am like a mother, and so I receive all candidates. I pray for all who come to me. I will support you with prayers,” he said.
He, however, emphasized that the ultimate decision on the country’s next leader lies with Ghanaian voters, who will base their choice on the policies presented by the various candidates. “After your policy is sold, the citizens will decide who they want…I pray Ghanaians listen to you and try you,” Otumfuo added.
The King also seized the opportunity to call for a peaceful election, stressing the need to maintain unity in Ghana. “We pray to God to make everything peaceful. We have only one Ghana, and by the power of God, Ghana will remain.”
Furthermore, Otumfuo discouraged the use of insults and derogatory remarks during political campaigns, urging all candidates to promote civility and mutual respect.
