Spokesperson for the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) faithful to watch the polls closely to sure that foreigners do not participate in the electoral process on December 7.
In a press conference at the campaign premises, Mr Aboagye said it was a long-held concern by the ruling party that non-Ghanaians could troop in from across the Ghana-Togo border and illegally vote.
“As we speak, we have directed all our polling station executives and all our party people to be firm, vigilant and ensure that not a single non-Ghanaian or foreigner is able to cast his or her vote. We always raise these concerns that we should allow the people of Ghana to exercise their franchise only.
He cited instances which he noted affirmed the campaign’s concerns about election irregularities in the Volta Region.
According to him, the Electoral Commission reported that the police had interrogated an election official for transporting election materials in a private vehicle and without police escort.
“It is quite worrying that these things seem to be happening in the Volta Region, the NDC’s stronghold,” he said.
The NPP presidential campaign’s lead spokesperson said they were “interested in what is happening” and will continue to keep tabs on the development.
He called it “alarming” and encouraged his fellow party faithful to keep a watchful eye as well.
“All of us must consider these incidents very very alarming and ensure that wherever we find ourselves, we heighten our vigilance, especially in the areas where these things are happening,” he said.
Mr. Aboagye accused the NDC of being behind the machinations to shore up their votes in what is clearly their stronghold.
In his address, he further called on the Electoral Commission to provide updates on the state of investigations with regards to the EC official in the Afadjato South Constituency who was caught transporting election materials in a private vehicle.
