Former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak has lauded Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene for his “exemplary leadership” in managing the aftermath of the August 6, 2025 plane crash, which claimed eight lives, including leading anti-galamsey advocates.
In a Facebook statement, Mubarak described Dr. Amoakohene as “a beacon of strength” who guided the region through a crisis “never before seen,” coordinating the emergency response under “unimaginable pressure.”
A medical doctor by training, Dr. Amoakohene is said to have witnessed harrowing scenes at the crash site “burning wreckage and loss that few could endure and remain sane,” Mubarak noted.
He called for psychological counseling for the Minister, residents of Sikaman near the crash site, and first responders to aid recovery from the trauma.
Mubarak also commended the military, emergency services, and Sikaman residents for their swift action in recovering victims’ bodies, saying their courage and unity reflected the resilience of Ghanaian communities in times of tragedy.
Among the eight who perished were Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Dr. Murtala Ibrahim, and former Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Limuna Muniru.
All were actively involved in the fight against galamsey illegal small-scale mining that has polluted about 60% of Ghana’s water bodies, degraded forests, and exposed communities to health hazards such as mercury poisoning.
Mubarak stressed that the victims’ deaths must spur stronger action against galamsey.
While initiatives like Operation Halt, the Multilateral Mining Integrated Project, and mercury-free mining programs under the Minamata Convention have made progress, he warned that corruption, economic dependence on illegal mining, and inconsistent enforcement continue to undermine efforts.
He urged the government to equip Operation Halt with surveillance drones, involve communities in land restoration, and expand alternative livelihood programs to reduce illegal mining activities.
Citizens, he said, must also advocate for cleaner rivers and forests to honour the victims’ legacy.
“We mourn the loss of our compatriots who gave their lives in the fight against galamsey. May their deaths inspire a renewed commitment to protect Ghana’s environment,” Mubarak said.
The cause of the August 6 crash remains under investigation.
