Commercial transport operators across the country have issued a three-day ultimatum to traders occupying roads and bus stops, demanding their immediate removal to ensure safety and free movement on major transport routes.
In a press release dated December 14, 2025, the operators called on the Ghana Police Service, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and other relevant authorities to enforce the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which prohibits trading on roads.
Citing Regulation 117 of the law, the transport operators stressed that “no person shall sell or offer for sale any goods or services on a road,” describing the continued presence of traders on roads and at bus stops as unlawful and dangerous.
The group is demanding that all traders vacate roads and bus stops within three days and that assemblies step up enforcement to ensure roads and transport terminals remain safe and accessible for motorists, passengers, and pedestrians.
The operators warned that failure to comply with the directive would compel them to take drastic action. According to the statement, commercial vehicles will be withdrawn from operation on Thursday, December 18, 2025, if enforcement agencies fail to act within the stipulated timeframe.
“If our demands are not met within three days, no car will move,” the statement said, adding that the transport unions would not be responsible for any disruptions to travel plans arising from the action.
The transport operators also called on their members nationwide to remain united and support the planned action, urging collective effort to “reclaim our roads and bus stops” from illegal trading activities.
The statement was jointly signed by leaders of major transport unions, including Asonaba Nana Wiredu, Acting Chairman of the Commercial Transport Operators; Samuel Amoah and David Agboado, Deputy National Public Relations Officers of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU); Charles Danso, National Chairman of the Ghana Committed Drivers Association; and Yaw Barimah, National Public Relations Officer of the True Drivers Union.
