Election 2024: Focus on competence, not religion lines in voting -NAPO
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on Ghanaians to reject campaigns based on religious and tribal lines, emphasizing that the nation’s voters have historically prioritized competence and leadership over such affiliations.

His remarks came in response to recent calls by some religious and political figures advocating for a Christian president in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking at a community engagement in Ahenkro, within the Afigya Kwabre North Constituency, Dr. Opoku Prempeh (popularly known as NAPO) described the push for religious considerations in the presidential election as unfounded. He pointed out that since independence, Ghanaians have elected leaders based on their qualifications, vision, and ability to deliver—not on their religious or tribal identity.

“Ghanaians do not discriminate when it comes to choosing their leaders. Being Christian or Muslim, Mamprusi, Gonja, or Asante, has never been a deciding factor,” NAPO stated, reinforcing that the electorate values competence above all else.

On this note, NAPO expressed strong confidence in the candidacy of Dr. Bawumia, stating that his proven track record, visionary leadership, and integrity make him the best choice for president. He highlighted that, as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia has spearheaded numerous successful initiatives and remains the most visible vice president in Ghana’s history.

“I am convinced that the good people of Ghana will vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia because he is competent and has a proven track record. He is the most visible Vice President in Ghana’s history, having successfully led many impactful interventions,” NAPO added.

Also addressing the gathering, Collins Adomako Mensah, the Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North Constituency and Deputy Energy Minister, highlighted the achievements of the NPP government, particularly in energy, education, health, and infrastructure. He urged Ghanaians to vote for Dr. Bawumia and NPP parliamentary candidates to continue these developments.

Following the engagement, Dr. Opoku Prempeh commissioned a newly constructed ultramodern sports complex in Ahenkro, funded by the Ghana National Gas Company Ltd. and supported by Nana Ahenkrosei Poku IV, the Chief of Ahenkro.

To celebrate the event, an inaugural football match was held between a team of Old Stars, led by former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah, and the Afigya Kwabre North 11. The Old Stars triumphed with a 3-1 victory.

This event marked a significant moment in the NPP’s campaign as the party continues to build momentum ahead of the 2024 elections, focusing on the themes of leadership, competence, and national development.
