Ghana Maritime Aauthority expands CSR footprint in Upper West with Motigu water project

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has commissioned a mechanised borehole at Motigu in the Wa East District, extending a growing programme of corporate social responsibility interventions aimed at improving access to basic services and protecting lives in the Upper West Region.

The latest facility was secured through a partnership between the GMA Director General, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, and the Member of Parliament for Wa East, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, after the MP appealed to the Authority to support efforts to address the community’s water challenge.

Dr Ali responded to the request by supporting the siting, drilling and mechanisation of the borehole, which is expected to provide residents with more reliable access to potable water.

The Motigu project forms part of a broader GMA intervention in the Upper West Region. In June 2026, the Authority, in collaboration with the Upper West Regional Minister and Humanity First Ghana, supported the provision of six mechanised boreholes for communities and institutions across the region, including Boli Primary/JHS, T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS, Biihee, Jirapa, Motigu and Guo. The facilities were intended to improve access to potable water for residents, schoolchildren and staff.

The Authority has also undertaken water-safety interventions in the region following the June 2025 drowning of seven students of Lawra Senior High School while crossing the Black Volta at Dikpe.

Working with the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, the GMA conducted safety education for canoe operators and passengers in five communities along the river and donated 30 life jackets to Dikpe, Bagri, Cha, Tebrimetor and Bapare/Gombile. Each community received six life jackets.

The interventions complement the GMA’s wider national campaign to improve safety on inland waterways, including the provision of life jackets and deployment of safety guards at identified crossing points. The Authority says the measures are intended to reduce preventable accidents and protect communities whose livelihoods and daily activities depend on water transport.

Against that background, the Motigu borehole represents more than a standalone community project. It adds access to a basic necessity—safe water—to the GMA’s growing social interventions in a region where rural communities continue to face significant infrastructure and service-delivery challenges.

At the commissioning ceremony, Wa East District Chief Executive Adamu Sayibu described Dr Kamal-Deen Ali as “a true definition of a dependable partner” and commended him for responding to the community’s needs.

He also expressed appreciation to Dr Jasaw and the chiefs and elders of Motigu for their roles in securing the facility.

The new borehole is expected to ease the burden on residents who have struggled to access reliable potable water while improving conditions for sanitation, hygiene and general public health.

The project also demonstrates how partnerships between state institutions, elected representatives and local authorities can channel institutional resources into pressing community needs.

For Motigu, the immediate priority is simple but fundamental: reliable access to safe water. For the GMA, the project further broadens its footprint in the Upper West Region from its traditional maritime safety mandate to practical interventions with direct impact on the welfare and safety of rural communities.
