The headmistress of Chemu Senior High School, Madam Vicentia Annin-Agyei, has raised urgent concerns over inadequate infrastructure pushing students into unsafe accommodations, including cohabiting with partners.
Annin- Agyei explained that the lack of boarding facilities has compelled many learners to rent rooms near the school, exposing them to vulnerabilities such as teenage pregnancies and compromised academic focus.
She said “Coming and commuting from home, some of our students are forced to look for homes around and rent, just to be able to come to school. This also poses another challenge.”
She added “Some of them are even living with their boyfriends and girlfriends. We have that challenge.”
The headmistress stressed that many students do not intend to find themselves in these situations but are instead compelled by their circumstances.
“Some are forced into that situation, not that they intended to be in that situation, but the situation has called for that”, she emphasized.
Annin-Agyei emphasized the need for immediate infrastructure upgrades, including boarding facilities and staff housing.
“We would urge that we address these issues first, so that at least we can curb some of these challenges,” Mrs Annin-Agyei noted.
