A High Court in Kumasi has dismissed petitions filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) seeking to overturn the 2024 parliamentary election results in three constituencies in the Ashanti Region.
The NDC had contested the outcomes in Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, and Ahafo Ano North, claiming that their candidates had rightfully won despite official recounts and the subsequent swearing-in of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs).
Arguing before the court, the NDC’s legal team alleged electoral irregularities and sought to have the results annulled. However, lawyers for the NPP MPs countered that the NDC’s petitions were procedurally defective, emphasizing that the petitioners failed to request the determination of security for costs within the mandatory 21-day period after the election results were gazetted — a critical requirement under Ghana’s electoral laws.
In its ruling, the court found that the petitions lacked procedural merit and consequently dismissed them. The court also imposed financial costs on the NDC, ordering the party to pay GHC10,000 in the Ahafo Ano North case and GHC30,000 each for the cases in Ahafo Ano South West and Obuasi East.
Reacting to the ruling, Shadrach Obeng Yeboah, counsel for the NPP MPs, welcomed the decision.
“It’s a victory for my clients and a victory for the administration of justice. We are satisfied that the court has affirmed the rule of law,”he stated.
The decision brings closure to the disputed parliamentary results in the three constituencies, reinforcing the declared wins for the NPP.
