The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament is actively considering initiating impeachment proceedings against President John Dramani Mahama, citing serious breaches of the 1992 Constitution.
This development follows President Mahama’s recent departure from the country while both the Vice President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, and the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, were also absent, creating what the Minority describes as a “constitutional vacuum” and a breach of Article 60, which governs presidential succession.
John Darko, Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency and a lawyer, accused the President of orchestrating what he described as a serious breach of the Constitution that has left the country without an acting President.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM monitored by Kumasimail, the legislator said, “As a people of Ghana, we must all fight against this act of the President. The problem is that at the time the President was leaving, the Speaker of Parliament had already left the country. So, when the President was leaving, he knew, or at the very least ought to have known, that he was going to create that vacuum. His leaving the country was going to be a breach of the Constitution.
“But now, the President has decided that he is an emperor who can do whatever he likes, regardless of the consequences, and left the country. Is that what we voted the President for? To blatantly violate our Constitution?”, he asked.
Darko indicated they will not hesitate to start impeachment proceedings if the government fails to address these concerns and uphold Ghana’s constitutional democracy.
He stressed “We will keep raising these issues, and at the appropriate time, if necessary, we will invoke impeachment proceedings. We will not sit idly by while the Constitution given to one is violated without any consequences.”
