The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has warned the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be cautious regarding their criticism of Sammy Gyamfi’s controversial dollar gift incident.
In an interview monitored by Kumasimail, Gbande stated that the NPP lacks the moral ground to criticize Gyamfi, accusing ex-appointees of the NPP of involvement in money laundering and corruption, with evidence of sudden wealth accumulation after appointments.
He cautioned the NPP not to start a conflict they cannot handle, implying that the NDC is prepared to expose such issues if provoked.
He said “we have evidence of NPP ministers involved in money laundering, they shouldn’t start because when they start they would have to run out of this country before we begin to bring it out you know”
“We know NPP appointees who didn’t have Land Cruisers before their appointment and they own now properties in cantoments if that is the way to go we are ready for them”, Gbande told Elton Brobby on the Pulse.
Gbande emphasized that President Mahama is committed to running a transparent government and expects appointees to maintain high standards of integrity.
He reiterated “president Mahama have made it very clear that he intends to run a transparent government and he has often cautioned that those who have been privileged and appointed to serve must do so with the highest standard of credibility and integrity “.
He defended Sammy Gyamfi, saying that although the dollar gift gesture was inappropriate and poorly timed, it was not unlawful, and Gyamfi has taken responsibility and apologized.
“the fact that some gesture has gone wrong and the fact that responsibility have been taken will not convince me to say that my brother Sammy Gyamfi has lodged questionable monies”.
Gbande also stressed that if complaints are lodged against any appointees, they should be willing to face legal scrutiny, and the same should apply to the opposition’s appointees.
“But I don’t think that we will waste our time on this matters if someone lodges a complaint against any appointee he or she will make himself available for the laws to be tested but when it gets to their turn they should be willing to allow the laws to be tested as well”.
