The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, endorsed Anwel Sadat Ahmed as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.
All 15 assembly members present voted in in the confirmation election where 17 voted yes in his favor while 7 voted no against his nomination, securing the required two-thirds majority and confirming Mr. Ahmed’s appointment.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Ahmed expressed deep gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to advance the development agenda of Oforikrom.
“I am humbled by this endorsement and call on all of us to unite and work together for the betterment of our municipality,” he said.
The confirmation ceremony, held at Banisvillas Hostel in Kentinkrono, drew a significant crowd, including branch and constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who came out in full support of the nominee.
According to local political observers, Mr. Ahmed becomes the first NDC nominee to be approved as MCE for Oforikrom since the municipality’s creation.
Oforikrom Municipal District, located in the Ashanti Region, was originally part of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly as a sub-metropolitan district council. It was elevated to a municipal status on March 15, 2018.
Mr. Ahmed is expected to assume office immediately to lead the local government’s efforts in addressing pressing developmental challenges and improving public service delivery in the area.
