Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of desperately trying to claim credit for the recent strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi, while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge their responsibility for issues like illegal mining (galamsey), power outages (dumsor), and other problems.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express with Evans Mensah monitored by Kumasimail, he highlighted the NDC government’s Gold Board initiative, which has brought $2.6 billion into the country within four months-far exceeding what cocoa syndication or the IMF program could provide annually.
He described this initiative as a “game changer” for Ghana’s economy, emphasizing that it is the inflow of foreign exchange and liquidity through the banking system that has stabilized the cedi.
He elaborated “Now we talking about an initiative today that within the first four months has brought into this country 2.6 billion USD in 4 months, annualize that and see the amount of foreign exchange that is being brought into the economy.
He added “Now if you have an initiative like this, that is far more than what cocoa syndication that was going to be giving us, that is far more than the IMF program was going to be given us on an annual level and remember this, IMF program often when the moment come for tranches to be released those are the moment where the cedi see some relative stability but now you have an initiative that literally could be bringing into this country billions of dollars across the month to the end of the year It’s a game changer It’s a complete game changer”.
Kwetey explained that this success is not about gold reserves but about the actual inflow of US dollars into the economy, which increases liquidity through the banking system and facilitates transactions.
He emphasized “We’re not talking about gold reserves. Two separate reality. It’s not a gold reserve that is bringing a transformation, It’s the inflow of USDs into the economy that liquidity. So anybody who therefore now needs has access to that liquidity going through what you call the whole with the banks and making available through transaction that is the game changer”.
He went on to say that the opposition is eager to take credit for the cedi’s appreciation but cowardly refuses to accept blame for their past failures.
Fiifi stated “I’ve heard our friends on the other side claim it’s their policy. No, it was not your policy. You didn’t have a gold board. You didn’t have the creativity to know that you could actually purchase gold and know that gold can be sold”
“I see them very desperate to take credit for appreciation of the cedi yet they are such cowards they won’t take responsibility for for Galamsey, they are cowards who take responsibility for doing so they are cowards who won’t take responsibility for anything that is negative but they want to ride on the back of something positive”.
According to Kwetey, they shy away from accountability on negative issues but want to benefit from positive outcomes.
He concluded by asserting that genuine politics must be grounded in truth and that the NPP will remain in opposition until they undergo a profound change in mindset.
Kwetey stressed “That group would have to take a long time in opposition until they have what you call a rebirth of their soul to appreciate that politics must be done on the back of truth”.
