President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with the United Kingdom as part of efforts to drive Ghana’s economic growth and stability.
Speaking at a high-level meeting with the UK Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, and other British officials at the Presidency, President Mahama emphasized the importance of trade, investment, and infrastructure development in fostering economic prosperity.
He acknowledged Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges and stressed his administration’s focus on fiscal discipline, foreign investment attraction, and job creation to revitalize the economy.
“One of our key priorities is ensuring fiscal discipline to navigate the economic crisis and restore Ghana to a path of sustainable growth. With a young and growing population, job creation remains a major concern, and attracting more foreign direct investment is crucial to addressing this challenge,” President Mahama stated.
He highlighted Ghana’s long-standing trade relationship with British companies and expressed his commitment to showcasing investment opportunities to encourage more UK businesses to establish partnerships in Ghana.
Touching on geopolitical uncertainties, President Mahama pointed out that global economic relations are becoming increasingly transactional, with many nations reassessing their financial commitments. He referenced Ghana’s need to bridge a $156 million funding gap* following reductions in international assistance, underscoring the importance of sustained partnerships with global allies like the UK.
UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner expressed the British government’s enthusiasm for deepening economic cooperation with Ghana.
“It is an absolute honor to be here and to witness your great election victory. What stood out in your campaign was your emphasis on the 24-hour economy, something we also aspire to in the UK. We share a mutual commitment to economic growth and job creation, and I believe we can achieve great things together,” she said.
She reiterated the UK government’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development agenda, emphasizing the potential for job expansion, trade collaboration, and investment-driven growth.
“Our government is aligned with yours in ensuring economic growth translates into real benefits for people. We will remain a strong partner in helping Ghana create good jobs, improve living standards, and drive national progress,” she added.
The meeting marks a significant step in Ghana-UK relations, reinforcing shared commitments to economic stability, investment promotion, and long-term development. Both leaders expressed optimism that their renewed partnership will yield mutual benefits for businesses, workers, and citizens in both countries.
