The Bono East Regional Police Command has arrested two people after intercepting a vehicle allegedly transporting contraband at Jema.
The Kia Rhino, with registration number UE 819-26, was intercepted on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation involving the Bono East Regional Police Intelligence Directorate and the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters in Accra.
The driver, identified as Fusini Danaa, was arrested around 4:00 p.m. while travelling from Nalerigu to Kumasi.
A search of the vehicle, which was loaded with maize, uncovered 321 boxes of foreign cigarettes, including Royals, Oris and Gold Seal brands.
The Police also seized 23 bags of soya beans, 39 bags of groundnut husks, 21 bags of millet and 100 containers of suspected sodium cyanide.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment was handed to the driver at Bentri near Nalerigu for delivery to a customer in Kumasi.
The driver and his mate are in custody assisting investigations.
The EPA and Ghana Standards Authority have taken samples of the suspected sodium cyanide for laboratory analysis, particularly because it was being transported alongside food items.
The Police say the vehicle and exhibits have been secured as efforts continue to identify and arrest others linked to the consignment.
