Work on the 37-kilometre Wa–Bulenga–Yaala road project in the Upper West Region has reached 27 percent completion and is ahead of schedule, the government has announced.
The project, being executed by Astee Company Limited under the government’s Big Push programme, covers the section from kilometre 37 to 74.
Works completed so far include the construction of U-drains and box culverts, earthworks and filling to formation level.
Roads and Highways Minister, Kwame Governs Agbodza, inspected the project during his tour of Big Push road projects in the Upper West and Upper East Regions on Thursday.
He expressed satisfaction with the progress but cautioned the contractor that the government would not compromise on quality in its drive to accelerate infrastructure delivery.
“We will not accept any substandard work. The reset is about doing quality work and giving the people value for money,” he said.
The progress on the Wa–Bulenga–Yaala project comes against the backdrop of the Minister’s dissatisfaction with the pace of work on some other Big Push projects.
During the same broader inspection exercise, Mr Agbodza warned that contractors whose performance remained unsatisfactory could have their contracts terminated.
The Wa–Bulenga–Yaala road is expected to improve connectivity and facilitate the movement of people and goods along the corridor.
Chiefs and elders in communities along the road expressed appreciation to the government for fulfilling its commitment to upgrade the route, saying the project was bringing relief to residents.
The government says the Big Push programme is intended not only to accelerate infrastructure delivery but also to ensure that public funds translate into quality and durable projects for communities.
For the Wa–Bulenga–Yaala corridor, the immediate expectation is that the current pace will be sustained through to completion, with quality maintained throughout the project.
