By Faith Catering Services, a hospitality enterprise in Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana, has fed over 1,200 destitute individuals, including children and persons with disabilities.

The annual event, held on Saint Valentine’s Day, brought together the elderly – both men and women, children and individuals from various disability organisations in the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality. The program was held at the premises of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Parish.

By Faith Catering Services hired buses to transport many of the attendees, particularly those living on the outskirts of Tamale and Sagnarigu, including areas such as Kumbungu and Malshegu.

Reverend Father Thaddeus Kuusah, the Northern Regional Secretary of the National Peace Council, who served as the guest of honour, described the feeding of over 1,200 destitute individuals as “a remarkable act of love and generosity”.

According to Rev. Fr. Kuusah, beyond the financial cost, “the initiative involves time, energy and commitment, which should not go unnoticed. I encourage all well-meaning individuals to support such noble efforts, not just on Valentine’s Day but throughout the year.”

One historical account states that during the reign of emperor Constantine, a law was enacted forbidding young men and women from marrying, as unmarried men were believed to make better soldiers. However, Saint Valentine, a priest, secretly conducted marriages, defending their right to love and marry. This act of defiance eventually led to his persecution, but his legacy of promoting love continues to this day.

Speaking in an interview with journalist, Rev. Fr. Kuusah explained, “the essence of Valentine’s Day is love – not just romantic love but also love  for our neighbour. For us as Christians, this day is a reminder of God’s love and the ultimate sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave His life for the salvation of humanity.”

“As we celebrate, we must remember that love is selfless. It requires sacrifice, mercy and compassion, especially toward the vulnerable in our society. That is why today’s event is so meaningful. Love should not be a once-a-year event – we must extend it periodically, ensuring that the vulnerable in our communities feel valued and cared for.”

Mrs. Matilda Zenabu Pipio, Manager of By Faith Catering Services, stated “I chose this day because it is a time when the whole world comes together to show love. For me, the best way to express love to my brothers and sisters is by sharing what I do best – serving them the food I prepare with passion.”

She emphasized that the initiative was about building relationships through business, stating “success is not just measured in money but also in the impact on the lives of others. This is why we have been running this program for the past 12 years, ensuring that both the rich and the poor can enjoy the same quality meals, free of charge, on this special day.”
