In a contentious session of the Appointments Committee on February 26, 2025, the Majority caucus recommended the approval of four deputy minister nominees despite the absence of the Minority caucus during the decision-making process.
The nominees include Yussif Sulemana for Lands and Natural Resources, Justice Srem-Sai for Justice and Attorney General, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini for Roads and Highways, and Yussif Issaka Jajah for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
The Minority’s boycott was sparked by a heated exchange between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor.
Tensions rose when Afenyo-Markin asked Justice Srem-Sai to demonstrate a traditional dance, a request Ahiafor strongly opposed.
Afenyo-Markin accused Ahiafor of being “whimsical” and “capricious,” leading to a brief suspension of proceedings.
Upon returning, the Minority caucus refused to support the nominees, citing concerns over the vetting process’s conduct. Despite this opposition, the Majority proceeded with their recommendation for approval.
The decision now awaits full parliamentary approval.
