President John Dramani Mahama’s nationwide thank you tour reached the Northern Region on Saturday, with a grand reception at the Tamale Jubilee Park.

The visit, aimed at expressing gratitude to Ghanaians for their overwhelming support during the 2024 elections, also highlighted key development concerns in the region.

As part of the tour, President Mahama first attended a grand durbar of chiefs hosted by the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Abukari II in Yendi. The durbar, attended by traditional leaders across the region, was a colourful display of cultural heritage, featuring drumming, dancing and regalia.

Yaa-Naa Abukari II used the occasion to urge the President to prioritise critical development projects in the region.

“We call on you, Your Excellency, to see to the completion of the Yendi and Tamale Water projects, which are essential for providing clean water and improving sanitation. The region also needs increased investment in irrigation to enhance agriculture and food security,” he said.

He further highlighted the need for renovations to healthcare infrastructure, particularly regional and teaching hospitals, as well as the completion of E-Block educational projects. Other critical areas mentioned included the exploitation of the iron ore deposits in Sheni and the creation of a Shea Board to support the local shea nut industry.

In a historic appeal, Yaa-Naa Abukari II in consultation with the Nayiri and Yagbonwura, proposed renaming the Tamale International Airport to Gbewaa International Airport in honour of Naa Gbewaa, the revered ancestor of the Mole-Dagbani people.

Responding to the chiefs’ concerns, President Mahama reassured them of his administration’s dedication to addressing the region’s press needs.

“I acknowledge the vital role traditional leaders play in maintaining peace and development. Your concerns are well noted, and I will work closely with my capable ministers to ensure these projects receive the necessary attention,” the President assured.

He emphasized that his government remains committed to equitable national development, with the Northern Region set to benefit from key policy initiatives aimed at economic transformation and social progress.

The durbar was attended by dignitaries including government officials, traditional leaders and members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC). It underscored the strong partnership between the presidency and traditional authorities in advancing national development.

President Mahama’s tour continued at the Tamale Jubilee Park, where he engaged directly with the public, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support.

The visit reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with the people and ensuring that all regions particularly the Northern Region, received the development they deserve.

Welcoming the President, Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John commended Mahama’s dedication to fostering national unity and inclusive governance.

“The people of the Northern Region appreciate your leadership and commitment to development. Your return to office has rekindled hope for many who believe in your vision for an inclusive and progressive Ghana,” Adolf remarked.

The Minister took the opportunity to appeal to the President for the establishment of a military barracks in Yendi to enhance regional security, curb recurring conflicts and counter violent extremism.
