The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has officially commissioned the newly upgraded Obuasi Bulk Supply Point (BSP), ushering in a new era of improved electricity reliability for residents and businesses in the area.
The technical commissioning, which took place on March 19, 2025, marked a significant milestone in Obuasi’s power infrastructure, replacing the previous single 10 MVA transformer with two 20 MVA transformers.
The upgrade is further strengthened by modern 11kV and 33kV switching panels, ensuring more efficient and stable power distribution across Obuasi and its neighboring communities.
Speaking at the event, Ing. Frederick Kwabena Bediako, General Manager for Special Projects at ECG, reflected on the project’s journey, which began nearly five years ago under the Strategic Business Unit regime. He expressed gratitude for the collective effort that led to the successful completion of the upgrade.
“Through hard work, resilience, and unwavering commitment, we have brought to life a vision that will benefit the entire Obuasi township and its environs. Today, we celebrate not just a technical achievement but an assurance of improved power reliability for the people,” Ing. Bediako stated.
He commended the dedication of the Sub-Transmission (Sub-T) team, the Head Office Projects team, and workers from Obuasi, New Edubiase, and Lutton Contractors, whose efforts were instrumental in completing the project.
Special recognition was also given to Ing. Daniel Mensah Asare, General Manager of Ashanti South, and Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, General Manager of Sub-T, for their strategic leadership.
The commissioning of the Obuasi BSP is expected to transform the town’s energy landscape, offering businesses a more stable power supply and improving household electricity services.
The upgrade aligns with ECG’s broader mission to provide reliable and sustainable power across Ghana, fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for communities.
