Richard Ahiagah, the NPP’s Director of Communications, has alleged that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) aims to remove the Chief Justice to lay the groundwork for an overhaul of the Electoral Commission.
In an interview with JoyNews monitored by Kumasimail, Ahiagah warned that the move threatens Ghana’s democratic foundations.
“Ghana is at a crossroads with the steps the NDC government is taking to undo our democracy, and I believe this calls for sober reflection.”
Ahiagah dismissed claims by Deputy Attorney General Justice Sram that the suspension process is purely technical.
“The process may be technical, but the motive is political. They want to remove the Chief Justice to pave the way to target the Electoral Commission. This is egregious and most unfortunate.”
He described the NDC’s promised “reset” as a threat with “grave implications for democracy.”
The remarks follow President Mahama’s unprecedented suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo on April 22, citing three confidential petitions alleging misconduct.
A five-member committee, including Supreme Court justices and civil society figures, is investigating the claims.
