Acting Managing Director of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi has cast doubt on the possibility of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo being exonerated by the presidential committee investigating allegations of misconduct against her.
He stated he would be “very surprised” if the committee clears the Chief Justice, citing specific claims of financial impropriety and disregard for court rulings.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen monitoring by Kumasimail, Gyamfi asserted, “If I were the Chief Justice, I’d welcome the investigation. If you’re innocent, you’ll be vindicated. If guilty as I believe she is, she must face consequences.”
He added that he would join a public thanksgiving at ICGC Church if she is cleared but insisted the evidence points to wrongdoing.
“If she’s not guilty, we’ll go to ICGC Church to give thanks to the Lord. But if she’s guilty, as I believe she is, then she should step down, because the Chief Justice’s seat is a position of great responsibility”.
Gyamfi accused Torkornoo of misusing public funds, including allegedly booking business-class tickets for family members during private trips and paying per diems to her husband and daughters.
He said “If you take Ghana’s money, pay per diem to your husband and daughters, and book business-class tickets for them during a private trip, you deserve to be sacked.”
He added “I’ll be very surprised if the committee clears her. I have a prejudiced view of the Chief Justice based on what I’ve seen. I’m not a judge, nor am I part of the committee, so no law prevents me from holding this prejudice against”.
The NDC spokesperson also criticized Torkornoo’s alleged refusal to comply with court decisions, stating, “If someone is dismissed and the courts reinstate that person, and you say you won’t respect the court’s decision, do you know if it’s a Supreme Court decision, you could even be guilty of a high crime? It’s a serious matter—how can you be a Chief Justice and not abide by the decisions of a court?”.
Sammy Gyamfi noted that 30 of 31 Council of State members endorsed the probe, countering opposition NPP’s objections.
He noted “Thirty out of the thirty-one Council of State members agreed that she should be investigated. The NPP says we shouldn’t investigate her.
“What sort of relationship do they have with the Chief Justice that makes them think she is above the law?” Sammy asked.
President John Mahama established a five-member committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang, to investigate the allegations. The committee includes former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo and military representative Major Flora Dalugo.
