The Ashanti South office of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), working closely with the Kumasi Central Police Service, has arrested five individuals suspected of unlawfully tapping into the water supply network.

The operation, conducted earlier today, is part of GWL’s intensified campaign to reduce commercial losses and ensure equitable water access across the region.

The suspects were apprehended after ignoring surcharges totaling Gh₵31,803.97 issued for their alleged illegal connections.

Out of the five, three individuals have settled payments amounting to Gh₵11,515.00, while the remaining two remain in police custody pending further action should they fail to meet payment conditions.

GWL officials highlighted the growing challenge illegal connections pose, significantly contributing to Non-Revenue Water (NRW)-water produced but lost due to theft, leaks, or unaccounted usage.

The company emphasized that such illicit activities severely impact revenue, undermining efforts to maintain and upgrade critical water infrastructure.

Madam Innocentia Kuupiel, Acting Regional Chief Manager of GWL Ashanti South, praised the Central Police administration for their support in the successful operation.

She expressed hope that the arrests would deter others from engaging in similar illegal activities.

“Illegal connection and siphoning of water have become rampant in the Ashanti Region, contributing significantly to Non-Revenue Water for the region”.

GWL is urging residents to assist in combating illegal water connections by reporting suspicious activities via a dedicated confidential hotline at 055 677 9028.

GWL spokesperson, Ebenezer Kwabena Padi reiterated the company’s commitment to serving customers and called on the public to join the fight against illegal water connections, which deprive the utility of resources needed to enhance operations.

“Ghana Water Limited is committed to meeting the demands of its customers and entreats that all and sundry should join the fight against Illegal Water Connections, as such acts deny the company the resources to enhance operations”, GWL spokesperson emphasized.
