The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 2,241 foreign nationals in a coordinated operation aimed at curbing organized street begging in the capital.
The intelligence-led operation took place in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, targeting undocumented migrants operating in key areas of Accra.
The operation, according to a press release issued by the GIS, is part of efforts to repatriate undocumented foreign nationals and disrupt networks that facilitate illegal street begging.
Targeted locations included Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai, and the Obetsebi Roundabout.
A total of 909 adults and 1,332 children were arrested. Among them, 961 were male and 1,280 female.
The Service indicated that all detainees are being processed through appropriate security and medical screening at the GIS National Headquarters in Accra.
“The Service assures all stakeholders and the general public that the detainees will be handled with the highest professionalism, with respect for their human rights,” said M. Amoako-Atta, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs.
The GIS emphasized that this operation is intended not only to enforce immigration laws but also to address the growing security and humanitarian concerns associated with the presence of undocumented foreign beggars in public spaces across Accra.
The Service reiterated its commitment to upholding the dignity of all individuals while safeguarding national security and public order.
