The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been picked up by operatives of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) shortly after being discharged from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra.
Details surrounding the development remain unclear, as the specific reasons for his arrest have not yet been disclosed by EOCO or the police.
Chairman Wontumi, a prominent figure within the opposition NPP, was reported to invitation to the CID Headquarters earlier today. After his engagement with officers there, he was released but immediately taken into custody by EOCO officials on the premises.
The unexpected turn of events has sparked widespread public interest and speculation, given Wontumi’s political stature and influence, especially within the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP.
As of the time of filing this report, neither EOCO nor the Ghana Police Service has issued an official statement regarding the arrest. Efforts to reach party officials or legal representatives for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
