The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has formally referred seven nominees for the Supreme Court bench to the Appointments Committee for thorough consideration and reporting, acting under the provisions of Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution.
The nominees, all recently appointed by President John Dramani Mahama, include distinguished jurists Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, and Justice Senyo Dzamefe.
The remaining nominees are Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
The referral was officially announced during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, May 27.
In a notable move, Speaker Bagbin directed that the leadership of both the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee collaborate with the Appointments Committee to vet the nominees.
This cross-committee engagement is expected to ensure a comprehensive and rigorous review process.
The referral follows constitutional protocols, which require parliamentary oversight for judicial appointments to the nation’s highest court.
