President John Dramani Mahama has officially announced that the government will begin disbursing nursing trainee allowances with retrospective effect starting January 2025.
The declaration was made during his ongoing thank-you tour in the Bono East Region, specifically at the Kintampo Nursing Trainee College, where he addressed concerns raised by nursing students.
During his visit, President Mahama reassured the trainees that the government has made adequate budgetary provisions to ensure timely payment of their allowances.
He emphasized that the delay in payments was due to the establishment of a new payment system aimed at streamlining the process.
“On the issue of allawa, let me assure you that the Minister has made adequate provision in the budget for the payment of allowances,” President Mahama stated.
“The allowances will be paid from January, so you will receive arrears when payments begin.”
The President explained that the Ministry of Finance is working to integrate the payment of nursing trainee allowances into the existing payroll system managed by the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.
This integration according to the President will ensure that trainees receive their allowances concurrently with monthly salary payments to government workers.
“What has delayed the payments is that the Minister is implementing a system so that you will be paid through the Controller and Accountant General. This means that every month, when workers receive their salaries, trainees will also receive their allowances,” he added.
President Mahama assured the nursing trainees that once the system is fully operational, they will not only receive their monthly allowances regularly but also the accumulated arrears dating back to January 2025.
“So when that is done, you’ll receive your allowances every month. And they will pay you the arrears from January until the time you started receiving the allowances,” he emphasized.
