Miracles Aboagye, the spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, has strongly dismissed allegations from the camp of Kennedy Agyapong that Members of Parliament (MPs) and former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) endorsing Bawumia are being financially sponsored.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story programme monitored by Kumasimail, Aboagye emphasized that the MPs and MMDCEs who have declared their support for Dr. Bawumia are independent adults capable of making their own decisions.
He described the sponsorship claims as baseless and illogical.
When asked about Kennedy Agyapong’s camp’s assertion that the MMDCE endorsements were sponsored, Aboagye responded with a mix of irony and confidence
“I mean, if we can get 220 people to agree and be sponsored by us to do this, then you can imagine how grateful we will be. And so for me, those are just things by the side,” he said
He further highlighted the inconsistency in the rival camp’s claims, recalling that just weeks ago, Agyapong’s group boasted of having the support of 50 MPs.
Yet, shortly after, over 60 MPs whom Aboagye counted as 67 visited Dr. Bawumia’s office to declare their allegiance.
“They said 50 MPs were on their side. That’s not true. Here we are, with over 60 MPs pledging full commitment to Dr. Bawumia,” he stated.
“Then they turn around and say these MPs were coerced or sponsored. It’s all just talk,” he added.
Aboagye reiterated that Dr. Bawumia’s campaign is focused on deploying every political strategy necessary to win the upcoming elections and realize the vision for the party and the country.
He said “For now, we are going to deploy political arsenal to win the next elections and make sure that Dr Mahmoud Bawumia’s vision and dream for this party and this country comes to fruition.”
He urged critics to watch and comment while his team remains steadfast.
“It is up to them to continuously sit there and watch and then make commentary about what it is that is going on. But we are focused and we are completely fixated on what we need to do to win the elections.”
Pressed on whether his remarks implied that Bawumia’s camp sponsored the MMDCEs, Aboagye firmly denied it.
“I haven’t said that. I said that if that is what he is saying, so be it. I haven’t alluded to it. I mean, it beats any logic or common sense for anybody to tell adults. And let me tell you something. I made a point that the former MMDCs, a lot of them, they have worked and contributed in this party than some of these people making this comment,” he explained.
He pointed out that several of these individuals have held key party positions, such as constituency chairmen and secretaries, for over a decade and were only appointed as MMDCEs after the party won power.
Aboagye indicated “We have people who have served as constituency chairmen for 12 or 16 years, and people who have served as constituency secretaries for 12 or 16 years. These are individuals who actually worked between 2009 and 2016 to ensure the party came to power. They were only appointed as MMDCEs after the party won power.
“However, they were the active executives at the time the party gained power. And you are saying that these people have no minds of their own because they did not come to declare for you, while a few who declared for you supposedly do have a mind of their own,” Aboagye asked rhetorically.
Aboagye also referenced earlier claims by Kwasi Kwarteng that a similar sponsorship scenario occurred in 2023 or 2024, involving 137 supporters.
He dismissed this as a “complete falsehood,” noting that many prominent figures supported Kennedy Agyapong without being labeled or disrespected.
He concluded by challenging the disrespect shown towards MPs supporting Dr. Bawumia, questioning why adults who have made their choices are being undermined.
He noted “In fact, when we started this contest, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia just barely about a week ago received the MPs related to this contest. He’s been busy with the national executives on the ThankYouTour and your group have been moving around this country with members of parliament. The MPs who are with them, are they sponsored? Are they staged? Why do you disrespect adults like this?”.
