Prangmanhene Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III has issued a stern warning to Muslim youth ahead of this year’s Mauwlid celebrations in Prang, emphasizing that any repeat of last year’s violence will not be tolerated.
Speaking through his linguist, Nana Kofi Darko, the traditional leader condemned the violent incidents including gunshots, theft, and assaults that marred last year’s religious gathering.
He stressed that Mauwlid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, is a sacred Islamic event and should not be turned into a scene of chaos and bloodshed.
“Mauwlid is a holy celebration. It is not a time for killing, stealing, or violence,” Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III said. “Anyone who attempts to repeat the atrocities of last year will be prosecuted.”
The Prang Traditional Council is calling for increased security presence throughout the celebrations, which begin today in Prang, located in the Pru West District of the Bono East Region. The Council has pledged its full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure peace and order.
District Chief Executive for Pru West, Samuel Agyapong, who also chairs the District Security Council (DISEC), echoed the chief’s concerns and issued a strong warning to attendees.
“This year’s Mauwlid will not be like the previous one,” he stated. “We are deploying more security personnel across Prang to maintain peace. If you’re here to worship in peace, the security will support you. But if you come to cause trouble, the law will deal with you.”
Mauwlid, also known as Maulid, is an Islamic holiday celebrated across Africa and beyond to mark the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. While observances vary, the event typically includes prayer, Quran recitation, poetry, and acts of charity. In Prang, it draws large crowds annually, particularly followers of the Tijaniyya Islamic sect.
However, the increase in criminal incidents during recent gatherings has prompted traditional authorities and local government to take stricter measures this year.
