The Ashanti Regional branch of National Security has intercepted counterfeit diapers smuggled from Nigeria and branded with the name of a Ghanaian company.
The products were confiscated at Asafo under the Interchange in Kumasi while being offloaded three weeks ago.
Checks revealed that the port duty documents covering the consignment were forged According to National security report.
Investigations have traced the source of the diapers to Nigeria, but the importers are yet to appear.
Subsequent tests by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) confirmed the products were fake and unsafe for public use.
Following FDA’s advice, National Security on August 20, 2025, transferred the seized items to Zoomlion’s Medical Waste Treatment Plant, where they were scientifically destroyed.
Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Tapsoba Alhassan, told the media that officers intercepted the latest consignment after trailing a truck from Accra to Kumasi.
“We followed the truck to Asafo Interchange, where the goods were being offloaded. Our officers first purchased a pack for inspection and later demanded documentation. Customs confirmed the documents were fake, leading to the seizure,” he explained.
According to him, some individuals have since called the National security office claiming ownership of the goods, but none has shown up in person.
“Since the seizure, a caller has repeatedly contacted our office, promising to come for negotiations, but the person never appears. That has been a major challenge,” Alhaji Tapsoba said.
He further disclosed that investigations are now focusing on local collaborators in Kumasi while efforts continue to apprehend the Nigerian ringleaders behind the smuggling operation.
“Reliable intelligence confirms the leaders are Nigerian nationals, and we are working hard to arrest them,” he assured.
