Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has shelved his presidential ambition and is now preparing to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Chairmanship position when nominations open for the party’s national executive elections Kumasi Mail can confirm.
The respected Mr. Boakye Agyarko’s decision follows strong appeals from constituency and regional chairmen of the party, who during a meeting in Kumasi earlier this year urged him to shift focus from the flagbearer race to the national leadership of the NPP.
They pledged to rally behind him and lead his campaign, citing his vast political experience and capacity to rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The NPP, currently grappling with internal concerns over finding a competent national chairman, had initially approached former Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
However, he declined, stating he would only consider the role if he was allowed to contest unopposed an offer party elders who approached him did not accept.
Boakye Agyarko, who previously served as Energy Minister under President Nana Akufo-Addo, is now being positioned by grassroots leaders as the figure capable of restoring unity and strengthening the party’s structures ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The NPP is expected to open nominations for national executive positions next year after the party’s Flagbearership race.
Currently, Boakye Agyarko and Bernard Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi are the the only two individuals who has expressed interest to contest for the National Chairmanship race.
Formal Kumasi Mayor Samuel Pyne who also served as Ashanti regional secretary of the NPP has expressed interest to contest for the deputy national Chairman position.
Former Chief executive of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Bantama Constituency, Chairman Henry Kwabena Kokofu is also campaigning to unseat the incumbent general secertary of the Justin Frimpong Kodua who is seeking reelection.
However, it is not clear unpopular National organizer of the party Henry Nana Boakye popularly known as Nana B will seek reelection.
