The Ga Traditional Council has directed the suspension of the 2025 Igbo Day and New Yam Festival scheduled for Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra.
In a letter to the Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, the Council raised concerns that the event, organized by Eze Dr. Amb.
Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, could “possibly cause mayhem and disturbance of peace and security within the Ga State” if allowed to proceed.
The directive follows the circulation of an invitation and flyer announcing the festival, themed “Sustaining the Culture and Traditions of Ndigbo in the Diaspora.”
The Council, referencing an earlier press release dated July 9, 2025, recalled that Dr. Ihenetu had been cautioned to desist from organizing traditional and cultural festivities under the guise of importing Igbo culture into the Ga State.
According to the letter signed by Registrar Evelyn Amewotse, Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II instructed the Council to act promptly to safeguard peace.
The letter urged security agencies to take immediate steps to halt the planned program.
The Ga Traditional Council emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the capital while reiterating its stance on cultural events within Ga State.
