I was not responsible for fertilizer distribution- Dr. Bryan Acheampong

Dr. Bryan Acheampong challenges false narratives, insisting fertilizer distribution was managed locally and denies any role in the NPP’s election defeat

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, has strongly refuted allegations that his supposed refusal to distribute fertilizers contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to party supporters, Dr. Acheampong described these accusations as unfounded propaganda aimed at undermining his reputation.

Addressing the claims, he stated, “I have heard three propaganda claims against me being pushed in the Upper West Region, saying that I didn’t bring fertilizer there and that this caused us to lose the election. But if fertilizer was what was going to win the election, then all we would have to do is buy fertilizer six months before the election and distribute it.

“No one can tell me that we won in 2016 because of fertilizer, or that we won in 2020 because of fertilizer,” Dr. Acheampong remarked.

He further explained that fertilizer supply was managed by multiple agents, including the Ministry of Local Government and the local NPP offices, who brought fertilizers to the Upper West Region well before the elections.

He said “Every single fertilizer intended for Upper West arrived. When the fertilizer reached the region, I was not responsible for distributing it. Distribution fell under the parliamentary candidates and the District Chief Executives (DCEs),” he emphasized.

Dr. Acheampong also dismissed allegations of withholding fertilizer stock, confirming that deliveries were timely and sufficient.

“The fertilizer was not sitting in my warehouse here in Accra. It was not with me. And the number of fertilizer bags we brought to the Upper West Region was more than any other year for the dry spell. Nobody has ever brought that quantity before.

“It was with you, yet you say you couldn’t share it. I don’t understand,” he quizzes.

He challenged critics to present evidence disputing the fertilizer distribution timeline, promising access to data that confirms when parliamentary candidates received their supplies.

“Fertilizer, even if it arrived on the morning of the voting day, actually came months before the election. If I address that, I will visit every constituency and show when the parliamentary candidates received their fertilizer. We have the data. We have the data,” he stressed.

Concluding, Dr. Acheampong urged party members to reject misinformation.

“But I’m saying that if it didn’t come, that is one thing. But you all saw the fertilizer in Upper West. Is that not the case? When the NDC came, they went to every constituency, locked it up, and took control. Why did you not share it? It was not with me; it was with you.”
