The 2025 SMEGA Awards in Accra put a national spotlight on the small and medium enterprises that continue to anchor Ghana’s economy despite persistent operational and financial pressures.
The annual event recognises firms that demonstrate leadership, innovation and resilience.
The ceremony brought together industry stakeholders, policymakers, diplomats and business owners. MTN Ghana participated as the headline sponsor.
Angela Mensah-Poku, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at MTN Ghana, called attention to the role SMEs play in the national economy. “This evening is both a celebration of achievement and a tribute to the people who run Ghana’s economy. SMEs contribute over 70 percent of Ghana’s GDP and employ millions across every region. MTN is committed to providing MSMEs with the digital tools and commercial ecosystem needed to compete and grow beyond Ghana’s borders. We believe that when we empower SMEs, we empower Ghana’s future.”
She referenced existing MTN-supported interventions such as MTN Adwumapa, MoMo for Business, the SME Accelerator Programme and SME Business Clinics, which she said are intended to support enterprise operations and access to digital services.
India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Shri Manish Gupta, who served as special guest of honour, commented on Ghana’s business environment and signalled India’s interest in deeper commercial cooperation. He said India plans to pursue growth in trade with Ghana, targeting an increase from 3 billion US dollars to 6 billion US dollars within five years.
Kwesi Ofori Jnr, Head of SMEGA Ghana, acknowledged sponsors and partners for their involvement in the awards scheme. “Through this platform, many businesses have grown into regional and global brands. Together, we are building a stronger and more prosperous SME future.” He said more than 67 SMEs have received digital and technical training through ongoing partnerships and outlined plans to help Ghanaian enterprises expand into markets in India, China and Europe.
The top award of the night went to Rita Aku-Shika Diabah, Chief Executive Officer of Yesli Ice, who was named Overall Best SME of the Year. She also received three other awards in the Woman Entrepreneur, Production Innovation and Food and Beverage categories.
In total, 21 other SMEs from across various industries were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to business innovation and growth at the 2025 SMEGA Awards.
