An aspiring Bono Regional Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abubakari Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando, has condemned what he describes as the mocking and humiliation of President John Dramani Mahama by some Zambians during the President’s recent official visit to Zambia.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Yakubu said he was disturbed by a video circulating on social media which allegedly shows Zambians hooting at President Mahama over his traditional smock attire. He described the incident as disrespectful and unacceptable, calling on those involved to show greater cultural awareness and respect.
Yakubu stressed that President Mahama, beyond being an individual and a political leader, represents the heritage, dignity and identity of Ghana on the international stage.
“The smock that was mocked is a powerful symbol of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage,” he said, adding that Ghana’s traditional attire should be celebrated rather than ridiculed.
Although he acknowledged political differences with President Mahama, who is a leading figure of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yakubu said national unity must override partisan considerations when Ghana’s image is at stake.
“This is a national call to action,” he stated. “While I may have differing opinions with President Mahama, I will stand firm against anyone from any country who attempts to humiliate my President.”
He further challenged Zambians to promote their own cultural heritage instead of ridiculing those of other African nations, arguing that African identity and traditions deserve mutual respect across borders.
Yakubu said as a member of the NPP, he considers it his duty to defend Ghana’s dignity and sovereignty, regardless of the political affiliation of the President involved.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media about cultural pride, mutual respect among African countries, and the treatment of national leaders during official foreign visits.
