The German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshoeft, has visited Oribili, a farming community in the Lawra Municipality of the Upper West Region, as part of efforts to assess ongoing development initiatives supported by Germany and the European Union.
Oribili is among more than 200 communities benefiting from joint German and EU co-financed projects aimed at addressing critical challenges such as limited access to healthcare, clean water, irrigation, and electricity, alongside the growing impacts of climate change.
During the visit, farmers, community members, and traditional leaders shared their experiences and concerns, highlighting changes in agricultural practices and the socio-economic links between the community and neighbouring Burkina Faso. Despite these challenges, residents demonstrated resilience and a strong commitment to improving their livelihoods, while calling for additional support to strengthen their capacity to adapt.
Key interventions under the cooperation include the development of over 200 Community Action Plans to guide local governance and identify priority development needs. In terms of infrastructure, more than 100 boreholes, nine irrigation systems, and six dams have been constructed to improve water access and agricultural productivity.
Efforts to enhance economic resilience have also seen the introduction of climate-adapted farming methods and the implementation of 42 agroforestry projects. Additionally, about 1,200 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises are expected to receive training in market access and financial management within the year.
The programme further promotes peace and social cohesion by supporting cross-border collaboration and strengthening local conflict resolution mechanisms.
These initiatives are designed to help vulnerable households withstand economic and environmental shocks, sustain livelihoods, and reduce poverty. The long-term investments are also expected to contribute to improved security in Northern Ghana.
Ambassador Landshoeft expressed appreciation to the people of Oribili for their warm reception, openness, and determination. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting communities in Northern Ghana and working towards a more secure and sustainable future for the region.
