Stanbic Bank Ghana has donated 50 laptop computers to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to support financially disadvantaged students and enhance access to digital learning resources.
The donation, presented by the Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank, Kwamena Asumani, forms part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusive education and bridging the digital divide in Ghana’s tertiary institutions.
Receiving the items on behalf of the university, KNUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, expressed gratitude to the bank for its consistent support over the past five years.
She noted that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 highlighted significant gaps in students’ access to digital tools, particularly among those from underprivileged backgrounds.
“While the university made efforts to transition to online learning during the pandemic, many students were unable to participate effectively due to lack of devices, with some not even having access to smartphones,” she said.
Professor Dickson emphasized that the donation would help address these challenges by enabling more students to connect to the university’s expanding digital infrastructure. She also praised Stanbic Bank for its sustained commitment to inclusivity, particularly its focus on supporting female students, who are often disproportionately affected by limited access to educational resources.
“Every year, Stanbic Bank has stood by KNUST, ensuring that no student is left behind. This support is not just about providing tools, but about transforming lives,” she added.
She further encouraged stakeholders to engage with beneficiaries to better understand the impact of such interventions, noting that many students’ stories reflect resilience and determination despite difficult circumstances.
The initiative is expected to improve academic outcomes for beneficiaries and reinforce ongoing efforts by KNUST to create an inclusive and technologically learning environment.
