The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has announced plans to deploy sanitation guards across communities in the metropolis from July as part of efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and enforce sanitation regulations.
The sanitation guards, popularly referred to as “Nsamansaman” in local parlance, will be tasked with monitoring communities and ensuring residents comply with sanitation laws.
Speaking to the media on Monday, June 8, Mr. Ofori Agyemang Boadi expressed concern over the continued indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drains and other unauthorized locations despite ongoing enforcement measures by city authorities.
According to him, the deployment forms part of a broader strategy to instill discipline among residents and address poor sanitation practices that pose environmental and public health risks.
The Mayor disclosed that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has already prosecuted several sanitation offenders but noted that some residents continue to disregard sanitation regulations.
“So far, we have sent about 26 people to court, but there are still recalcitrant ones. We are not giving up. We will work until we instill discipline,” he said.
Mr. Ofori Agyemang Boadi added that he would personally participate in the exercise to ensure its success and demonstrate the city’s commitment to maintaining a clean environment.
“From July 1, we will bring back the Nsamansaman that we used to experience in Kumasi,” he stated.
The initiative is expected to strengthen enforcement efforts and support the city’s campaign to improve sanitation standards and prevent the outbreak of sanitation-related diseases.
