The government is set to significantly expand Ghana’s public transport capacity, with the State Transport Company (STC) expected to receive 140 new buses within the next two months as part of efforts to improve mobility and address growing transportation challenges across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who said the move forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen public transportation services and provide commuters with more reliable and convenient travel options.
The planned fleet expansion comes at a time when many passengers continue to grapple with inadequate transport services, overcrowding, and delays, particularly on intercity routes where demand for travel remains high.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Monday, June 8, the Minister outlined the government’s plans to increase the number of high-capacity buses operating across the country. He explained that the initiative extends beyond the 100 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses commissioned earlier this year and includes substantial investment in STC’s operations.
“We know the difficulties that we are experiencing with transportation but we are very certain that the next 100 MMT buses will come in within the next two months and STC will also have 140 buses and we will be able to have more high occupancy buses,” he stated.
According to the Minister, the arrival of the new buses will enhance connectivity between major towns and cities, increase passenger-carrying capacity, and help reduce pressure on existing public transport services.
The government believes the additional buses will play a crucial role in improving the efficiency of the national transport system and providing relief to commuters who rely on public transportation for daily and long-distance travel.
